Does anybody remember Black Lives Matter?
Most people seem to have completely forgotten it. Nobody truly discussed it during the 2024 election in the United States, and Kamala Harris did not really bring it up.
It was the point around which the universe revolved for a short while, especially after George Floyd’s death in 2020 during COVID lockdowns (something also lost in recent memory).
Everybody was whipped into a frenzy. Celebrities flipped out on Instagram, companies showed their support on Twitter, and mobs (remember “fiery but mostly peaceful”?) rampaged, looted, and burned down buildings at a time when everyone was supposed to be indoors.
Why were thousands of people in the United States and even places like Germany or Australia allowed to publicly demonstrate over this when police were forcefully arresting people who were swimming on beaches alone, I remember asking myself.
A particular subset of that movement was “Black Trans Lives Matter,” something that arose as an addendum to the heavily-funded and media-backed original version.
