A common argument that one occasionally hears, usually from a Very Smart Conservative Male™, is that “transgenderism” is a result of and directly attributable to feminism. This is even as cross-dressing males like Bruce Jenner ran for governor of California as a Republican and others like James Pritzker support conservative causes.
Isn’t this convenient? Now they don’t have to talk about male violence, male pornography addicition, or male stupidity, and the fact that we live in a society that coddles all three. Uh, great job femsisminsm! Looks like you did it again!
Men like Matt Walsh fundamentally misunderstand human history, legal history, and what feminists, especially TERFs, argue.
Women were discriminated against based upon sex for centuries and still are. Men were very comfortable with saying because women, all women, are female that means wife-beating should be legal, child marriage should be legal, women should be wholly kept out of university, law school, medical school, legislatures, and I can go on. Everyone should be aware of this.
Fundamentally, men were all too enthusiastic to deny women anything that leads to financial, economic, and social power. I do not think this is motivated by a deep desire to pRoTeCt and PrOvIdE. I believe that males are motivated by a desire to control and subjugate, and that it is innate. It’s not ALL though! is not a convincing argument.
The point of feminism, starting from the beginning, is to provide women a legal, economic, and social movement that centers their sex-based best interests because men do not and cannot do that, and there are thousands of years of history to support that contention.
Women who fought to get into spaces like law schools were not pretending to be something that they were not. They were saying they should not be kept out due to their sex.
Men who want to be in women’s prisons are saying that they are something that they are not, and they are demanding that due to their perversions, not to obtain real financial or social autonomy. Their boundary violations are a victory lap to show off their societal power, not a way to obtain it.
The fact that men like Matt Walsh do not see the distinction here, or that he views spaces like law schools as rightfully male-only, speaks volumes.
Since men harped for millenia that because males and females are different and that is the basis upon which men get to deny women basic autonomy in any arena that men choose, it is necessary to point out that there is overlap in many traits for females and males. That is something many feminists have pointed out because it is an obvious response to egregious sex-based discrimination. There is overlap when it comes to personality traits, for example.
However, we are not exactly the same biologically. Men like Matt Walsh want to take those biological differences and use it as an excuse to deny women whatever is convenient for men. Good job reinforcing the feminist argument, Matt.
I wonder why he does not want to discuss male violence when women are getting punched by men like Jack Hudner or “Tara” Wolf for protesting men in women’s prisons in public? Huh…makes you think.
Where did the idea that men can “transition to” women come from? Who funds and pushes it today?
As the great work of Jennifer Bilek shows, and it appears that Matt is ignorant of her research, this is not a civil rights movement and did not appear as a grassroots political campaign.
The original ideas are rooted in the teachings of several male doctors, but the ubiquity of the modern agenda is essentially the result of billionaire activists and an intense media campaign. Just because some women are dumb enough to go along with it because they are terrified of the backlash (understandably so because it is intense) does not mean that feminism is the origin. If men did not start it, there would be nothing to go along with in the first place.
